Good day fine reader, nice to welcome you here to a new college from Dutch Designers Outlet her Lingerie and Swimwear expert. This blog revolves around the frequently asked question'what is a kimono'. In a nutshell, I can answer the question by saying that it is a traditional garment from Japan. But there is so much more behind this beautiful garment!

What is a kimono? History

If we want to answer the question "what is a kimono" as precisely as possible, it is important to dive into its history. As for the bathrobe, it has a very long history. Initially, this garment seems to be based on the banyan. This is another type of garment that was worn by men during the time of the seventeenth century. The banyan was used after bathing or when receiving visitors.

In Japan, people used a similar garment that listened (and still listens today) to the name "kimono. Originally, this is a silk cloak to be tied with the help of a belt. To this day, the design of the traditional kimono is still very reminiscent of the bathrobe we all know and wear.

The difference between the traditional kimono and the bathrobe

The difference between a kimono and a regular bathrobe is often not entirely clear. For a kimono, it is a traditional garment from Japan that is made of silk. Compared to a bathrobe, it is actually a kind of loose cloak that you can tie shut using a belt. In Japan itself, a kimono is worn during special occasions such as a wedding or a tea ceremony.

The western bathrobe

Here in the West, we use the widely known bathrobe. Often made of a thick, soft fabric that keeps you warm after showering or bathing. Or worn while lounging before or after bed to provide extra warmth. When visiting a sauna, you can often borrow one for comfort and privacy between activities.

The western kimono

In my opinion, a kimono cannot be compared to that classic bathrobe. Bathrobes give a completely different experience than a kimono, as it looks much more elegant and is more like a piece of clothing. They are characterized by a fairly basic design with no fuss. This means that they often do not have a shawl collar, side pockets or other extras. The kimono, on the other hand, is not boring or less luxurious. They are often made of high-quality material and run beautifully smoothly along the body. Not surprisingly, there are even kimonos with a slightly sexier look. Perhaps these are meant for special occasions....

What material is a kimono bathrobe made of?

For a traditional kimono it is made of silk. Today the women's kimono is more than a traditional garment you will also come across them made of cotton. To keep the price down they are also increasingly using materials such as polyester. Like all clothing, the kimono is available in every color imaginable.

How do you wear a kimono?

A kimono is usually worn simply over lingerie. You can wear a kimono loose and open. If you want something less exposed, you can close them with a knot in the belt around your waist. In one word, kimono can be described as fantastic. The elegant design is characterized by the wide sleeves and a beautiful cut. They know how to accentuate the female form in an excellent way.

Kimono in summer, enjoy in moderation

Kimonos are often made of a fine, airy fabric. Especially during the spring and summer months, they are very popular to wear. Enjoy a lovely lazy sunday with breakfast in the sunshine. It is so much nicer in a nice comfortable women's kimono than in a warm classic bathrobe.

Silk ladies kimono, definitely worth discovering!

Is a breezy women's kimono bathrobe something for you or are you more into the classic bathrobe? It's very personal although we can best say that this clothing is more than worth discovering. A kimono has a beautiful, elegant look and is also incredibly comfortable to wear. Compare the differences again and find a nice kimono bathrobe.
