Welcome to the lecture halls of Professor Sir Sebastian! In my very first lecture on lingerie and swimwear, we're going to look at the shape of your body. These are the pure basics: every body has a unique shape. Knowing your body shape makes it a lot easier to buy perfectly fitting designer lingerie, bikinisor swimsuits. Attention, because we are going to start right away!
Let me start at the beginning. In lingeriology we distinguish two categories: form and function. By function we mean: "what can I do with it?" By form - and that's what it's all about today - we mean, "what does it look like?" This lecture is about the shape of your body: your 'figure', 'curves', or 'silhouette'. What you attract (or pull out in some situations) depends on your figure. Some designs fit your body shape perfectly, others do not. What you can wear (function) depends on your body (shape).
Before you buy that voluptuous bikini or those flashy panties at Dutch Designers Outlet, it is good to consult the mirror. There are as many body shapes as there are people. Yes, your own body is also completely unique. Turn up the heat and take off all those clothes! No, no grumbling, just do it: this is all for science. That bra too, and those underpants can go too. Let's go!
Look through your eyelashes at the shape of your body. What do you see? Broadly speaking, the fashion world uses three basic forms: triangles, ovals and rectangles. We walk past them together for a first impression.
With an oval figure, the emphasis of your curves is around your waist. Do you have narrow shoulders, thin legs and wide hips? Then oval is your body shape. A fuller belly also makes your body oval in shape. If you have full breasts, but narrow shoulders, this also contributes to an oval shape.
If your figure resembles a triangle, it's because your shoulders are wide and your hips and waist narrow, or the other way around. With a triangle with the tip up, your waist/hip area is just wider than your shoulders: the pear shape. The third 'triangle' is the hourglass figure: normal or wider shoulders, normal or full hips and a narrow (wasp) waist.
You have a rectangular basic shape if both your shoulders, waist and hips are about the same narrow or wide. This body shape is the least 'curvy', but don't worry: beautiful style tips are also available for your rectangular basic shape!
Now that you know what your basic shape is, you've already taken step 1. From here we can work out what your best matches are when it comes to lingerie and swimwear designs. To be clear: there are no 'good' or 'bad' shapes here, so don't take a very critical look at yourself! We are all beautiful in our own way. As a lingerie guru I promise that ideal lingerie fits your body as well. It's all about making the right accents: emphasizing your strengths.
.... But of course I'll wait until the next college, because I wouldn't be naughty enough if I didn't make a cliffhanger out of this. So next time we'll go from form to function: what works best for the body shapes we've discovered?
See you very soon at Sir Sebastian's steam course "Underwear for the Superstructure"!
